Staff Members Earn New Credentials

Nei-Long Lyang, M.S., Research Biologist in IITRI's Microbiology and Molecular Biology Division, recently received two new certifications: Certified Bioinformatics Specialist (C.B.S.) from National Bioinformatics Institute, and Oracle Certified Professional Database Administrator (OCPDBA) from Oracle University.

A member of the IITRI staff since 1993, Mr. Lyang's technical expertise lies in in vivo and in vitro microbiology assays (e.g., biopesticide testing, bronchoalveolar lavage testing, and drug screening), and in genetic toxicology (e.g., Ames test and Micronucleus assay). He also has worked in the area of biodefense. He currently leads the Ames Test sub-group in the Genetic Toxicology Section. Mr. Lyang is a member of the Illinois Society for Microbiology and the Society of Toxicology, Midwest Regional Chapter.

Heidi L. Kreuzer, Technical Editor, recently received a M.S. in Technical Communication and Information Design from the Illinois Institute of Technology. A member of the IITRI staff since 2002, Ms. Kreuzer prepares reports on a wide range of toxicology studies performed at IITRI, according to Sponsor and regulatory specifications.

Previously, Ms. Kreuzer served as Senior Editor of Pollution Engineering magazine, a publication serving environmental engineers; Senior Editor for Weeks Publishing Company, a publisher serving food scientists and chemists; and Senior Research Aide/Scientist Appointee at Argonne National Laboratory.

Certified Industrial Hygienist Joins IITRI as Health and Safety Officer

Gregory A. Kolar, M.S., C.I.H., recently joined IITRI's staff as Environmental, Health and Safety Officer. In this role, Mr. Kolar manages a comprehensive environmental, safety and health (EHS) program that supports IITRI's research operations. He also serves as Health and Safety Advisor to IITRI's Select Agent program, and serves on IITRI's Safety Committee and Radiation Safety Committee.

A Certified Industrial Hygienist, Mr. Kolar holds a M.S. in Industrial Health from the University of Michigan and a B.S. in Environmental Health from Illinois State University. Prior to joining IITRI, he served as Manager of Industrial Hygiene and Radiation Safety for Pharmacia, and held similar posts for chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturerers. He is a member of the American Industrial Hygiene Association and the American Society of Safety Engineers.

Staff Members Celebrate Service Anniversaries

Dr. Robert Sherwood, Assistant Vice President and Manager of the Microbiology and Molecular Biology Division, recently celebrated 20 years of service with IITRI. Dr. Sherwood specializes in biosafety level 2 and 3 infectious disease research, identification of highly virulent bacteria and fungi, immunotoxicology, immunobiology of macrophages, small animal infection models, health effects of environmental and occupational inhalation exposures, and toxicity/pathogenicity testing of microbial pesticides.

He holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of California at Davis and is the author or co-author of 22 publications and 37 abstracts and presentations. Dr. Sherwood is a member of the American Society for Microbiology, the Illinois Society for Microbiology, and the Society of Toxicology.

Ruth Booker, Biotechnician in the Inhalation Toxicology Division., recently celebrated 10 years of service with IITRI. Ms. Booker is responsible for all aspects of animal care in the Inhalation Toxicology Division. She is a member of the Chicago Branch, American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).

Kelly Harrington, Laboratory Biologist III in the Microbiology and Molecular Biology Division, recently celebrated 10 years of service with IITRI. Serving as Laboratory Supervisor and Study Director, Ms. Harrington specializes in microbiology, biopesticide testing, bronchoalveolar lavage testing and small animal procedures. She holds a B.S. in Biology/Psychology from Loyola University of Chicago and completed postgraduate study at the Illinois Institute of Technology. She is a member of the Illinois Society for Microbiology.

Dale Daniels, C.P.A., Accounting Manager, recently celebrated 5 years of service with IITRI. Mr. Daniels is responsible for internal and external financial reporting to meet the needs of IITRI's customers, department heads and auditors. He holds a B.S. in accounting from Illinois State University.
