ABSL-2 and ABSL-3 Services

IITRI's newest laboratory addition is a 2,300 ft2 animal biosafety level-3 (ABSL-3) shower-out facility comprised of 3 animal holding rooms, an inhalation suite, and separate BSL-3 laboratories. The facility was subjected to a full commissioning procedure, and was inspected by the CDC, USDA, and U.S. Army prior to its opening. The facility is registered with the CDC and USDA under 42 CFR 73 for select agents, with all pertinent requirements for such animal facilities, in addition to AAALAC accreditation and OLAW assurance. The ABSL-3 addition joined IITRI's 4 room ABSL-2 facility.

Study Types:

  • Therapeutic: animals are inoculated with a known number of organisms, sufficient to cause disease in 85-95% of animals. At time points specified by sponsor (immediately after dosing or after establishment of disease) animals are treated with therapeutic agent.
  • Vaccine Efficacy: animals undergo a vaccination regimen. After vaccination, animals are exposed to a lethal microbial challenge to assess vaccine protection.
  • Infectious Model Development: determination of LD50 levels, routes of therapeutic administration, routes of microbial challenge.

Organisms:

  • Extensive library, multiple strains and surrogates of NIH A, B, and C pathogens.

Animal Species:

  • Mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, and ferrets.

Routes of Exposure:

  • Subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous, intraperitoneal, intracerebral, intratrachael, intranasal, nose-only inhalation.
